The Money Metaphor Method
“Life is a game and money is how we keep score.” — Ted Turner
1-1 Coaching to Fix Your Money Problems
You Have Money Issues That You Hide, Even From Yourself. You Can Know Better and Still Keep Doing the Same Thing
You may think changing your relationship with money is about learning better financial skills.
You tell yourself you're going to save, invest, charge more, ask for the raise, grow the business, or finally get your finances organized but something keeps getting in the way.
You can know all the right things about money and still find yourself repeating the same patterns.
Maybe spending money makes you anxious or it gives you a temporary hit of excitement.
Maybe you're out having dinner with friends and find yourself calculating the cost of everything as you look through the menu, checking the price of the dishes.
Maybe the thought of making more money brings up thoughts of more responsibility, pressure, or even guilt.
Maybe earning more seems to require working harder and longer hours.
Maybe money feels like something you have to chase, fight for, hold onto, protect, or constantly worry about.
And maybe you've wondered:
Why do I keep doing this when I know better?
You keep making money mistakes because your internal stories (your money metaphors) keep sabotaging you.
“Money is just a tool.” — Ray Dalio
Metaphors don't simply describe our experience.
They organize how we understand it.
If money is something you have to chase, what happens when you stop running?
If money doesn't grow on trees, how scarce must it be?
If you have to work hard for money, what would it mean if money came easily?
My fascination with metaphor began in an unexpected way.
After surviving two brain aneurysms and multiple strokes within a two-week period in 2020, I had to relearn fundamental things, including aspects of walking, thinking, and language.
During my recovery, I became intensely aware of the relationship between words, meaning, and experience.
Later, I heard this question:
“Are we living in metaphors, or are the metaphors living in us?”
That question stopped me in my tracks and fundamentally changed how I saw language—not just as a way we describe our experience, but as something that may help shape the way we experience it.
I began noticing the metaphors hidden inside everyday language.
And nowhere did I find them more powerful, emotional, or revealing than around money.
As I began changing my own money metaphors through processes and frames I learned and developed, I noticed something else changing with them, my money stories.
The way I thought about money.
The way I felt about it.
And the choices and opportunities I began to see.
That exploration became The Money Metaphor Method.
That's Where The Money Metaphor Method Begins
How This Works
Map your personal money metaphors
We begin by uncovering the phrases, beliefs, inherited sayings, images, and metaphors that may be shaping how you experience money.
Most people have never stopped to notice the language underneath their money patterns.
Naming them is the first shift. You can't transform a story you can't see.
Rewrite the Story
This isn't about taking a limiting metaphor and simply replacing it with a positive one.
We work with the metaphor that's already there.
Together, we explore its meaning, assumptions, and purpose and what needs to change for a new metaphor to feel genuinely believable and supportive.
Through guided metaphor work, questions, reframing, imagery, and experiential practices, we allow the old metaphor to evolve into something that offers greater choice, possibility, and ease.
We also use simple somatic practices, including movement and breath, to help you experience the new metaphor rather than only understand it intellectually.
The goal isn't to give you a clever new phrase.
It's for the new metaphor to feel like something you can actually live from.
This is where the real change happens: clients report feeling a physical release, calm, or lightness as an old money story loses its grip.
Live the New Language
You’re given simple daily practices and personalized visual reminders so the new metaphors stick in real life, in how you spend, earn, ask, and talk about money. You leave with a new internal script, not just a good feeling that fades by Friday.
This is where we find out whether your new metaphor merely sounds good or whether it actually feels like yours.
And perhaps most importantly, what now feels possible that didn't feel possible before.
THE PROCESS: THREE PHASES
Phase 1: Discovery & Money Story Audit (Week 1)
A 60-minute 1:1 session to uncover the money metaphors you're living inside. I listen for the language, patterns, and body responses. We identify the top limiting money stories and metaphors that have been living in you and writing your money script.
Phase 2: The Rewrite Sessions (Weeks 2–4)
Two focused 1:1 sessions where you’re guided through rewriting each core money metaphor and anchoring the new one somatically. Between sessions you'll have short, personalized practices to reinforce the shift.
Phase 3: Integration & Your New Money Language (Week 6)
A final 1:1 session to lock in your new internal script, hand off your personalized practice reminders, and build a simple plan for keeping the change alive on your own.
This is where we find out whether your new metaphor merely sounds good or whether it actually feels like yours.
During the integration period, you'll receive simple personalized practices designed to help you notice when the old metaphor appears and intentionally reconnect with the new one.
It's for the new metaphor to feel like something you can actually live from.
How you talk about money.
And perhaps most importantly, what now feels possible that didn't feel possible before.
You leave with your own supportive money metaphor and personal language you can continue using long after our work together ends.
What Others Have Experienced
“Julie has had a real impact on money, my life and business. She helped me think differently about value, pricing and selling. I'm more confident asking for what my work is worth, and I'm much clearer in how I communicate that value to clients. But more than that, Julie has helped me challenge some of my own thinking and become more focused and intentional. I'm a better consultant and business owner because of working with her.”
— Tim F., Orlando, FL
“My experience with Julie's metaphor work was absolutely wonderful—insightful, unique, and eye-opening. Through Julie's thoughtful questions and reflections, I began to notice the threads and themes that connect my thoughts and emotions on a subconscious level.
What really stood out to me was how passionate and skilled Julie is at what she does. She has such a natural ability to create a warm, safe space for exploration while gently guiding the conversation in meaningful directions. Her method created an awareness, clarity, and understanding of myself on a deeper level.”
— Katherine D., FL
“With a few simple yet well-timed observations, she guided me to the questions that were waiting to be asked. Julie has zeroed in on old patterns and internal scripts that I unknowingly revisited again and again.
Julie has been instrumental in helping me move toward my personal goals and in becoming more of who I truly am.”
— Patricia B., Toronto, Canada
“After our work together, I'm fully back in my business, and the business has been nonstop busy and money has been flowing in consistently. I have clear and strong boundaries, and I feel more in control of my business and income.”
— Tracy B., Clearwater, FL
About Me
I'm Julie Kim McMahon.
My fascination with language took on an entirely new meaning after surviving two brain aneurysms and multiple strokes in 2020.
Relearning aspects of language made me intensely curious about the relationship between words, meaning, and experience.
That curiosity eventually led me to money metaphors—and to developing the process that became The Money Metaphor Method.
Today, I use this work to help people uncover the hidden language shaping their relationship with money and create metaphors that offer greater choice, ease, and possibility.

BENEFITS & PERKS
Less money stress — fewer anxious, scarcity-driven decisions and more calm around money.
Less shame around money — explore your patterns without turning them into evidence that you're bad, irresponsible, or “just not good with money.”
Real, felt change — this is somatic, not just intellectual, so the shift lands in your body, not only your head.
More trust in yourself with money — make decisions from clarity rather than fear, urgency, guilt, or old conditioning.
Catch the pattern earlier — recognize the metaphor, belief, or story driving your behavior before it becomes another automatic money decision.
More choice, less autopilot — instead of automatically obeying an old money rule, you'll have space to respond differently.
Uncover the hidden rules you've been living by — discover the unconscious assumptions beneath sayings like money doesn't grow on trees, save for a rainy day, or you have to work hard for money.
Turn limiting metaphors into useful ones — you'll learn how to work with the language already shaping your experience rather than simply repeating positive affirmations you don't believe.
Stop fighting yourself — understand what your current money patterns may be trying to protect you from, so change doesn't have to feel like an internal battle.
A repeatable process you can use afterward — leave with questions and tools you can apply whenever another limiting money story appears.
See money patterns you couldn't see before — once you recognize the language underneath a behavior, patterns that once seemed random can become much easier to understand.
More congruence between what you know and what you do — close the frustrating gap between understanding money intellectually and behaving differently when money is actually involved.
Change the metaphor, change the choices available to you. When the unconscious story shifts, you may begin seeing possibilities that the old story couldn't see.
A safe, patient guide — I meet you exactly where you are, at a pace that respects you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this therapy?
No.
The Money Metaphor Method is transformational coaching focused specifically on your money metaphors and your relationship with money.
It isn't psychotherapy, mental health treatment, financial planning, investment advice, or a substitute for professional financial or mental health care.
I've tried money mindset work before and it didn't stick. Why is this different?
Because we aren't simply trying to convince you to think more positively about money.
We start with the language and metaphors you're already using and explore the meaning underneath them.
Rather than giving you a generic affirmation, we work toward a metaphor that feels personally meaningful and congruent—and then use personalized practices to help you bring it into everyday life.
Do I need to be "good with money" already?
Not at all.
This work isn't about testing your financial knowledge.
It's for people who notice recurring thoughts, emotions, or behaviors around money they would like to understand and change—as well as people who simply want to explore what's shaping their current relationship with money.
What if I don't know what my money metaphors are?
That's exactly what the Discovery session is for.
Most of us don't consciously walk around thinking, My metaphor for money is...
We find it by listening to the words, phrases, images, assumptions, and stories you already use when talking about money.
What if my new metaphor doesn't feel believable?
Then we don't force it.
That's useful information.
The purpose isn't to paste a positive metaphor over an old belief. We explore what isn't fitting and continue working with the metaphor until we understand what's getting in the way.
Ready to Discover the Money Metaphor You're Living?
You don't need to know what your metaphor is.
That's what we're going to discover together.
The first step is simply becoming curious about the language you've been living inside.
